RealVNC and VNC Viewer are simple remote connection softwares.The configuration is quite easy and I suggest trying it out, as there's a free trial possibilit.

RealVNC is quite elegant, comes pre-installed on RaspiOS Full Desktop, and can be used on a LAN without a RealVNC Cloud account. Using a RealVNC Cloud account provides additional functionality. RealVNC for personal use is Free, and if you use a Cloud account there.

This script is designed to perform a one-off installation of VNC to a remote computer, apply a password through the registry, then connect to the computer using the VNC viewer.

The script can support RealVNC, TightVNC and UltraVNC (not INI-based) distributions. This script supports only Windows 2000/XP/Server 2000/2003 variants.

I'm working on Vista/7/2008.

This How-To will explain how to set up the script for first time use as well as connecting and controlling a PC, in addition to going over command-line arguments, script variables to tailor it to your environment and additional tips.

9 Steps total

Step 1: Requirements

* You must have administrative rights and access to the remote admin$ shares on the computer in addition to remote registry access.

* You must have some flavor of IE installed the system to show the connection status window. This is NOT needed on the remote computer.

* Localized firewall software is either disabled or exceptions have been made to allow incoming connections to the configured ports (by default, 5800 and 5900 - these are configurable in the script).

Step 2: Run the script for the first time

1. Save the script as 'install_vnc.vbs'.

2. Double-click it.

When you run the script for the first time (after being downloaded here), you will be prompted with the following message:

'Setup mode enabled. Disable setup mode by changing 'bSetup' to 'true' (without the apostrophes) in the core script.

Once you've verified your folders have been created, disable setup mode.'

3. Click 'OK'.

The script will then generate a series of folders, readme and reg files that will help you get started. These items will be created one level BELOW your current script location in a folder called 'VNC'.

Note that the registry files aren't properly formed .reg files, they will not import properly if you double-click them (that's not what they are here for, anyway!).

4. Now that the folders are created, edit the script and change the 'bsetup' variable to 'false' (without the apostrophes).

Step 3: Download the VNC distributions

1. Go into each folder under the 'VNC' folder and review the readme and links inside. The 'neededfiles.txt' file will contain the names of the files you need (duh) to make that distribution work with the script.

For the purpose of this how-to, we'll just assume that you will be working with RealVNC (you can download the other files later for Tight and Ultra distributions).

2. To work with realvnc, go to http://www.realvnc.com, download their 'Personal' distribution, install it on a workstation and copy 'winvnc4.exe', 'wm_hooks.dll', and 'vncviewer.exe' into the 'realvnc' folder.

Step 4: Run the script, connect to a computer

1. Double click the script, install_vnc.vbs (as named above).

2. Enter a computer name in the inputbox and click 'OK'.

3. Pick a distribution of VNC you wish to connect with (for our How-To, pick 'RealVNC', i.e. option '1'), click OK.

4. You will then see an IE-driven status window with a scrolling set of actions that the script is taking in order to connect.

5. If there is a VNC distribution installed on the remote computer prior to running the script and the password is different then the one you are pushing, you will be prompted asking if you would like to overwrite the current password on the remote system.

6. If all goes well, you should get a vncviewer password prompt window. Enter your password (default is 'remote' if you've not changed your password reg key) and click 'OK'.

Step 5: Changing the remote connect password (optional)

The default password for connecting to a remote PC and/or server is 'remote' (if you decide to push the password). If you want to change this, you must do the following:

1. Install VNC (I suggest RealVNC), making sure to install as a service - i.e. 'Register and configure VNC Server for Service-Mode'

2. Once finished, you will be prompted with the VNC Server Properties (version 4.x). On the Authentication tab, click the 'VNC Password Authentication' radio button, and click 'Configure'. Enter the password you wish to use. Click 'OK' to close out of all screens, and finish the setup.

3. Open regedit from this computer, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARERealVNCWinVNC4. Export the key called 'Password', save it to your desktop.

4. Open the file you saved in step 3. above in notepad. Copy the 'Password' line to your clipboard (ctrl+c)

5. Open the file called 'vnchooks_settings.reg' with notepad. Make sure that the password is in this format (you can paste your line over the current contents):

'Password'=hex:bf,27,fb,81,f5,1e,30,21

(in this case, the above encrypted password is 'remote')

6. Repeat the above steps with a different password and save it into the 'vnchooks_settings_server.reg' for server connections.

I believe there is a utility out there called 'vncpwd112.exe' which can help with this process. I'm looking at integrating it within the script itself.

Step 6: Command line arguments - (optional)

* computer:remote_PC_name - which computer to install and connect to

* user:windows_user_name - windows user account to use (domainusername supported) to connect

* password:user_password - windows user password to use while connecting and installing VNC

* servicestop:true | false - upon disconnect, stop the service

* type:realvnc | tightvnc | ultravncreg - which flavor of VNC to install and connect with

* unregister:true | false - uninstall the VNC service after disconnect

Command lines supersede variables that are staticly set in the script.

Step 7: Setup - Script Variables (optional)

Read the commented variables in the script contents to tailor the script for your environment.

**** iQueryConnect=0

Force remote computer to prompt with 'accept/reject' for remote connection

0 = do not prompt
1 = prompt

**** iQueryOnlyIfLoggedOn=0

Allow VNC connection to the remote computer if no one is logged in without prompting.

0 = allow connection without prompt with no user logged in remotely
1 = do not allow connection without prompt with no user logged in remotely

**** iPortNumber = '5900'

Default port to connect to via vncviewer

**** iHTTPPortNumber = '5800'

Default port to connect to via HTTP

**** sWorkstationRegistry = 'vnchooks_settings.reg'

Name of workstation 'registry file' where password is contained.

**** sServerRegistry = 'vnchooks_settings_server.reg'

Name of server 'registry file' where password is contained.

**** sRemoteFolder = 'SYSTEMDRIVE:program files'

Location on remote system where the VNC files will be copied to. Use SYSTEMDRIVE:folder path if you wish for the script to determine the same volume which contains Windows as the drive to install to.

**** strFoldertoCopyFrom = strScriptPath & 'vnc'

Where are the files located that we wish to copy to the remote system? NOTE: This does not include specific VNC flavors, but the general registry keys, etc. Each VNC flavor will be stored in their folders underneath the main 'VNC' folder used by this script.

**** bCloseStatusWindow = true

Close the status window when we are done with the connection?

true|false

**** sStartupMode = 'automatic'

Set the startup mode of the service to..? Recommend 'manual' or 'automatic', anything else will cause problems.

**** bStop = false

Stop service after VNC Viewer terminates? Command-line switch
